Environment

Contributing to a Sustainable Society

At Protea Japan, we are committed to sustainability. We strive to ensure that our products and their production have minimal impact on the environment.
• We only use natural, renewable and ethically sourced ingredients
• We buy carbon credits to offset ocean and air freight

Additionally, we take care to ensure that our business practices contribute to a sustainable society. All our PET (polyethylene terephthalate) packaging is sustainably sourced from reforestation and recycled ocean plastic and can be recycled. The strength of PET in relation to its light weight is key to its energy efficiency, as more product can be delivered in less packaging, using less fuel for transport.

Workplace wellness

In line with our mission to support people’s health and wellness across all stages of life, at home and at work, we are committed to providing the best working environment for our employees.

The varied work, meeting and rest spaces encourage a hybrid, flexi-time way of working to empower our people to stay active, engaged and productive.

Employees are encouraged to embrace the Live Active philosophy by eating healthily and exercising regularly using Power Plate machines onsite.

Our office in Toranomon was carefully planned to meet LEED* and WELL* Gold-standard sustainability and ergonomic design features. The disruptive design is intended to cultivate collaborative, cross-functional, agile thinking and management processes.

We achieved LEED Gold status in 2021. Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is the most widely used green building rating system in the world. LEED certification is a globally recognised symbol of sustainability achievement and leadership.

We achieved WELL Gold certification in 2022. WELL is a performance-based system for measuring, certifying, and monitoring features of the built environment that affect human health and well-being, through air, water, nourishment, light, fitness, comfort, and mind.

Sustainable Development Goals

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future.

At its heart are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call for action by all countries – developed and developing – in a global partnership. They recognise that ending poverty and other deprivations must go together with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all whilst tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests.

At Protea Japan we focus on the contributions we can make to five of these goals:

Good health and wellbeing:

ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all ages

Gender equality:

achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls

Decent work and economic growth:

promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all

Sustainable cities and communities:

make cities and human settlements safe, resilient and sustainable

Responsible consumption and production:

ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns

Commitment to minimising animal testing

At Protea Japan, we partner with globally successful brands whose products are backed by scientific evidence and endorsed by medical professionals.

Underpinning our Live Active ethos is our responsibility to evaluate and guarantee customer safety. We are committed to contributing to the health and wellbeing of all living beings, both scientifically and ethically.

Environ skin care products are tested only on human volunteers. Additionally, Environ’s product development and production complies with the EU Cosmetics Directive, which prohibits the sale of products or ingredients that have been tested on animals.

While no animal testing is conducted for Lapolis or Active Supplements end-products, some natural ingredients that go into the manufacture of these products may have been tested on animals.

The “3Rs” principle

We take the issue of animal testing extremely seriously. Where we develop our own products (Active Supplement and Lapolis), we are guided by our own ethical framework and the international principle of the “3Rs”:

  • Replace: avoid or replace the use of animals
  • Reduce: minimise the number of animals used
  • Refine: use methods that keep pain or distress to a minimum

Ethical partnerships

We partner only with manufacturers who have a deep understanding of, and shared commitment to, the use of alternative methods and new technologies, where viable, and do not conduct testing on animals to the extent possible.

The only cases in which testing on animals may occur are:

  • To meet local laws and/or regulatory requirements
  • When there is no other way to scientifically guarantee safety and effectiveness
  • For research & development of new materials, manufacturing methods or analysis methods that contribute to the health of consumers
  • To clarify nutritional impact, the mechanism of sensory receptivity, and the pathogenesis of diseases
  • To confirm the safety of new materials or manufacturing methods that contribute to the health of consumers
